Staff Handbook - New Employees - Getting Started

Payroll

If you are a classified employee, you will be paid biweekly. Academic and Nonclassified employees are paid semi-monthly. As a service to you, and upon your request, the Office of Accounting Services will send your paycheck directly to your bank or the UNO Credit Union (this can be arranged through the Payroll Section of Accounting Services). All banks are eligible. Your check stub, the portion of your check showing gross earnings, deductions, net pay, etc., will be picked up by your department on the pay date. If you choose not to use direct deposit, the check will be available in your department. If you are on an academic-year appointment, you may have your salary reapportioned and distributed over 12 months instead of nine months. Please contact the UNO Federal Credit Union to accomplish this.

Upon your request, the Payroll Office will also deduct (in addition to regular insurance, retirement, and tax deductions) tax-sheltered annuity payments, Credit Union payments, United Way donations, U.S. Savings Bond purchases, tuition (by approval of the Bursar), season athletic ticket purchases, and other prearranged deductions.

Any change in your tax filing status should be reported immediately to the Payroll Office.

In order to ensure that you, as a new employee, are paid in a timely manner, all appointment and other necessary forms must be completed and returned to the Office of Human Resource Management promptly. This includes the signing of a Loyalty Oath, which is required of all employees by Act of the 1950 Louisiana Legislature.

Parking

UNO Main Campus Map

The University provides over 6000 parking slots for faculty, staff, students and visitors. Parking lots are strategically located to ensure sufficient parking near all main buildings. You will need a parking decal, issued by University Police, in order to park legally on campus. There are two large pay-parking lots for visitors. For more information on parking procedures, University Police publishes a Parking and Traffic Regulations pamphlet. Call University Police with specific questions.

Identification Cards

Identification cards are issued to all eligible employees by the Office of Media Resources, located in Liberal Arts Room 150. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. Initial cards are free. There is a small fee for replacement cards. These cards are used as a means of identification and to give you access to a number of campus services, including library privileges and bookstore discounts, as well as discounts on the use of facilities such as the swimming pools and tennis courts.

Hours

The regular, full-time work week for all employees other than teaching faculty is 40 hours. Part-time schedule can be established at the discretion of the department head.

Regular working hours for most departments are 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, but can be established outside of this schedule as determined by the operational needs of each department. Your supervisor will inform you of your work schedule and times for lunch and breaks. It is sometimes necessary to change an employee’s work schedule, and when this occurs, the employee is given as much notice as possible. Employees are required to accommodate such requests.

Breaks

The lunch period is designated as one-half hour. Two fifteen-minute breaks are allowed each day; one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Breaks are a privilege and not a right and may be taken only at the convenience of the department and with the approval of the supervisor. Breaks may not be used to extend the lunch period, nor may they be used to make up for time absent, late or leaving early.
