Campus Activities

The Office of Campus Activities gives administrative direction and support to campus activities, commuter services, student development, campus organizations, new student orientation and Greeks. Services and activities are open to the UNO staff. Faculty and staff are often called on to lead seminars in student leadership development and training, budgeting, and personal development for campus groups.

The programs of the Student Government Activities Council (SGAC), which is the programming arm of the Student Government Association (SGA), receive administrative support from Campus Activities with events such as pop and art film series, children's movies, dinner theater, comedy nights, panel discussions and debates, lectures, outdoor festivals, TGIFs, jazz nights, etc.

Apartment listings, information on Louisiana landlord / tenant lease regulations, city maps, Louisiana Consumers League brochures, emergency information, photo copy services, general University information ride boards are other services open to the staff.

Check Cashing

The Office of the Bursar, located in the lobby of the Administrative Building, will cash your personal checks. There is a small service charge and an amount limit of $25.00 for personal checks.

Children's Center

The University of New Orleans Children Center is dedicated to serving UNO students, faculty and and staff. The shared goal of the University community and the center's personnel is to provide an exemplary early childhood education environment to all children. Each child is treated with dignity and respect for his/her own individuality.

The UNO Children’s Center is accredited by the National Association of Early Childhood Programs, an affiliate of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The facility is state-of-the-art and complies with both State and Federal Health & Safety Codes.

The 16,000 square foot facility is designed to provide care for 200 children at one time and accommodates five age groups: infants, toddlers, two-year-olds, three-year-olds and pre-kindergarten. The center includes a kitchen equipped to prepare and serve meals to the children and staff.

Counseling Services

UNO Counseling Services is designed to assist students in dealing with personal challenges that may interfere with their academic goals. These services are confidential and include individual assessment, brief individual, group and couples counseling, crisis intervention, limited psychiatric evaluation, conflict coaching and mediation. Career testing/counseling and psychological testing are available. Referrals are made for students with difficulties beyond the scope of services provided. Skills building, psycho-educational workshops, programs, seminars and classroom presentations are offered to students and the university community, and include topics such as anger management, anxiety management, assertiveness training, career and life planning, communication skills, diversity awareness, money management, self-esteem building, substance abuse, stress management, time management, study skills and more. These student services are funded by the Student Health fee. Faculty/Staff case consultation and referral information is provided on request.

UNO Counseling Services is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS) and the professional staff is either licensed in a metal health profession or supervised by licensed professionals. UNO Counseling Services is a multidisciplinary training site of Masters and Doctoral level mental health counseling interns from several regional universities.

International Students and Scholars, Office of

The Office of International Students & Scholars (OISS) offers support to international students, faculty and staff who study and work at UNO. The OISS provides orientation, immigration advising and cultural and educational programming. UNO departments who wish to employ or invite prospective international faculty and staff are responsible for contacting OISS prior to making job offers to international candidates.

All new employees who are not US citizens or permanent residents are required to check in with the OISS upon their arrival to campus. The office is located in the University Center, Room 260.

Kiefer /UNO Lakefront Arena

The Arena is located on the 90-acre grounds of the University's East Campus. the interior converts from a 2,400-seat theatre for theatrical performances to a 10,000 seat venue for major events or anything in between. The Arena has a meeting room, an Olympic-size pool, one of the finest in the southeast, an outdoor warm-down pool, and a gymnasium, providing two basketball courts and houses the offices and facilities of the Intercollegiate Athletic Department.

Rentals

The Main Arena, Privateer Room and Aquatic Center are available to the faculty and staff on a rental basis. Contact arena Administration for availability, booking restrictions, and rental information (Arena Administration: (504) 280-7171, Aquatic Center: (504) 280-7238).

Aquatic Center

The Aquatic Center is available for employees and staff to use for a minimal charge of $2.00 per use. Presentation of UNO ID is required. Individual and family memberships are also available on a one-semester, two-semester or year-round basis.

Library

The Earl K. Long Library is conveniently located at the center of the Lakefront campus, and provides a wide range of information resources and services for UNO students, faculty, and staff. Library staff are available to assist you with your research and information questions either in person, on the telephone, or by e-mail. The UNO Library is open seven days a week when classes are in session. Check the Library web page at http://library.uno.edu for current hours or call (504) 280-6353 for recorded hours.

Besides coming to the Library to do research or check out library materials, UNO staff can easily access the Library web page from office or home to find resources and services. The web page provides links to the online catalog for locating materials owned by the library, as well as access to a broad variety of research databases and full-text resources.

Borrowing Library Materials

You can check out circulating library material (books, periodicals, CDs, federal documents) by presenting your current UNO ID card at the circulation desk on the main floor. Due dates vary for the kind of material checked out.  Staff are not charged overdue fines, but are expected to be good colleagues by returning or renewing library material promptly.

Borrowing from Other Libraries

UNO staff can borrow materials not owned by the UNO Library in two ways:

  1. Get a LALINC card at the circulation desk that provides borrowing privileges at participating academic libraries around the state.
  2. Request books or articles through the Library’s Interlibrary Loan service by filling out the electronic form on the UNO Library home page. This service is free to UNO staff.

Mail Service

The University of New Orleans Main Mailroom is located inside the Campus Police Building. The primary function of this department is to process all incoming and outgoing mail which consists of First Class Mail, Priority Mail, Second Class Mail, and all interdepartmental mail to the designated departments. The hours of operation are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday - Fridays and 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday's. To aid in prompt delivery, all incoming mail must be clearly labeled with the Employee's Name, Main Department Name, followed by the Sub Department Name. For example, John Doe, Accounting Department, College of Business, New Orleans, LA 70148. Please note, the zip code is 70148 and only applies to the University Only. Campus Mail should not be used for sending or receiving personal mail.

University Mail Room Other Services

The Mailroom also operates as an extension of The United States Postal Service that offers similar services that are available to all staff members. The services offered are Post Office Box Rentals, Express Mail, Global and Priority Mail, Money Orders, Postage Stamps, etc.

Recreation and Intramural Sports (RIS)

The Department of Recreation and Intramural Sports (RIS) provides a diverse program of both structured and unstructured recreational sports designed for students, faculty and staff who wish to participate in such activities for their own pleasure. These sports do not require the intensified training and high degree of skill of college varsity athletics. An individual’s playing ability is not as important as his or her desire to participate in the spirit of competition and good sportsmanship.

Recreation and Fitness Center (RFC)

The UNO Recreation & Fitness Center has approximately 87,000 square feet of space dedicated to a variety of recreational and fitness activities. An expansive 16,000 square feet is allocated with state-of-the-art equipment that includes, but not limited to: plate loaded/free weights with urethane plates and easy grip handles, selectorize and cardiovascular equipment. Amenities in the Recreation and Fitness Center include: TV’s in the cardiovascular and free weight area, Dr. Richard Stillman Track (1/10 mile), natatorium (25 yard/4 lane pool), day and reserved locker rooms, outdoor deck, two racquetball courts with glass back walls and hardwood maple floors, two dry saunas, gymnasium housing three full-size basketball courts with hardwood maple floors which can be used for volleyball and badminton, two multipurpose rooms for group exercise activities and a snack bar area with seating.

Varsity Tennis Complex

RIS also operates 12 lighted tennis courts located in the East Campus. Courts are available for students, faculty, staff and active alumni upon presentation of a valid ID card. Community members have access to the courts for a small fee.

Intramurals

The intramural sports program is open to students, faculty, and staff. Women’s, Men’s, and Co-rec sports are offered throughout the year. Team Activities include: basketball, flag football, softball, and volleyball. Individual/dual activities include badminton, racquetball, and tennis.

Club Sports

Club Sports are designed to bring people with common interests together. All club sports are organized and managed by students and provide recreational and competitive programming under the direction of RIS. Club Sports consists of soccer, canoeing/kayaking, wrestling, and sailing.

Summer Sports Day Camp

The UNO Summer Sports Camp provides a curriculum for boys and girls (age 5-13) that enables them to participate in various sport activities. The program is held during the months of June, July and August. Activities include: softball, flag football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, tennis, recreational swimming, badminton, wallyball, frisbee, golf, track and field, flexibility, “kiddierobics”, and adventure walking.

Student Health Center

Because the Student Health Center is funded by student fees, its services are intended primarily for students and their spouses. These services include a medical clinic with full-service laboratory; x-ray and pharmacy facilities; mental health services; and the WeIlness Program, which offers health promotion and education. Faculty; staff, visitors and families of students may receive limited services, primarily for on-campus emergencies or work- related injuries. Routine immunizations for foreign travel or for general maintenance, as well as blood screening, are available for faculty and staff during regular hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays). Services of the Student Health Center are not available to families of faculty and staff members. Specialized immunizations, such as rabies or allergy shots, are not available to faculty and staff.

UNO Federal Credit Union

The UNO Federal Credit Union has been serving the UNO community since 1972. Membership is open to faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students enrolled on a full-time basis, Alumni Association members, and family members of these groups.

Operating under the Federal Credit Union Act, the credit union provides a variety of products and services designed to meet your financial need if you become a member.

Savings accounts and checking accounts are offered, in addition to Individual Retirement Accounts and Christmas Club accounts. All credit union accounts are insured up to $100,000 by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), an agency of the Federal Government. Additionally, the first $2,000 in the savings account is covered by life insurance provided by the credit union at no cost to the member.

UNO Federal Credit Union also offers a variety of loans, home equity loans, overdraft protection and signature loans. Other services include payroll deduction (UNO only), direct deposit, ATM Cards, Mastermoney, Debit Cards and Internet Home Banking. Members are able to cash checks up to $500.

The Credit Union is open Monday through Friday from 9:30am to 3:30pm. New accounts are opened between 9:30am and noon, Monday-Friday. Call 280-6496 for more information about any aspect of credit union membership or services.
