Staff Handbook - Foreward

The University of New Orleans (UNO) is a member of the Louisiana State University System and has met all requirements to be categorized by the Southern Regional Education Board as a Four-Year II University. UNO operates primarily as a comprehensive metropolitan university providing essential support for the economic, educational, social and cultural development of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The institution’s primary service area includes the seven parishes surrounding New Orleans.

As a selective-admissions institution, UNO serves the educational needs of this population primarily through a wide variety of baccalaureate programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, and in the professional areas of business, education, engineering and the social sciences. A variety of graduate programs are offered at the University; including doctoral programs in chemistry; education, financial economics, political science, psychology and urban studies.

Types of Employees

Categories of University employees include the following:

  • Faculty - Faculty members are defined as full-time members of the academic staff holding the rank of instructor or above, and equivalent ranks.
  • Other Academic Employees - Other academic employees include part-time members of the academic staff and full-time members of the instructional staff below, the rank of instructor, or equivalent. Employees with academic responsibilities who do not hold faculty rank are also included in this classification. For the purpose of this Handbook, this category also includes part-time faculty (instructors and above); teaching, research, and library associates; analysts, lecturers, and coordinators in Metropolitan College; and adjunct faculty.
  • Nonclassified Employees - This category includes administrative officers and professional staff, as well as all employees in positions exempt from the provisions of the State Civil Service System.
  • Classified Employees - Classified employees are all employees in positions covered by the provisions of the State Civil Service System. All actions affecting classified employees are made in accordance with Civil Service rules and regulations.

Employees Excluded from this Handbook

This handbook does not cover student, temporary or transient employees. All policies and benefits applying to faculty are described in the Faculty Handbook.
